A superb transfer printed and hand tinted octagonal earthenware plate by Wallis Gimson & Co of Lane Delph Pottery, Fenton, Staffordshire. This factory operated between 1884 and 1890 only producing earthenware items such as this. This octagonal plate was one of a series depicting famous Victorians and was produced in about 1886. This is plate number five of the Portrait Series depicting the Right Honourable Joseph Chamberlain MP - the famous Liberal-cum-Imperiealist. He was more usually pictured wearing his monocle. The plate itself is quite heavily crazed but this does not detract from its quality. As you would expect, this is an extremely rare plate and it is unlikely that we will ever be in a position to offer another. Measures 9.5 inches in width and height.
