A mounted, framed and glazed sepia tone print of houses in Watergate Street in the City of Chester. A printed quote on the reverse reads This etching gives a very interesting group of buildings. The house to the left is known as Bishop Lloyds Palace and it is certainly unique. From gable almost to basement it is decorated with a constant succession of grotesque carvings, the designs presented in the eight lower panels being of particular note. Five of the number are intended to illustrate the plan of Salvation, and have for their subjects Adam and Eve in the Garden, Cain murdering Abel, Abraham offering Isaac, The Immaculate Conception and a symbolic representation of the fulfilment of the prophecy to the Virgin. Yea a sword shall pierce through thine own heart also. Overall, framed, measures about 14 1/2 inches x 11 1/2 inches, 37cm x 29cm and weighs about 910g.
